One ordinary man. One extraordinary Soccer Aid for UNICEF mission.
Mission accomplished: Sam Thompson has crossed his Match Ball Mission finish line!
Sam has completed the ultimate test of endurance, successfully transporting the Soccer Aid for UNICEF match ball more than 260 miles from last year’s stadium, Stamford Bridge in London, to the home of this year’s match, Old Trafford in Manchester. Pushing himself to the absolute limit, Sam battled injuries and all the elements as he took on five back-to-back days of gruelling running and cycling between iconic football stadiums across the country – all to raise vital funds to support UNICEF’s work for children around the world. You’re a hero, Sam!
An exhausted Sam’s final morning began in the rain (again!) at 5am and as he travelled on foot and bike through Warrington, Stretford and even the Coronation Street cobbles before finally delivering the match ball to Old Trafford where he was met at the finish line by crowds of cheering supporters including his sister Louise Thompson, brother-in-law Ryan Libbey, and nephew, Leo.
Sam said: “To everyone who has donated, I’ve said it before but I’ll say it a million times, you are so heroic. This money will help so many children!”
The money raised from Sam’s challenge will support UNICEF’s work for children around the world to grow up safe, healthy and able to play.
And there’s still time to support!

A rollercoaster of a week for our Sam.
5 days cycling and running over 260 miles, one injury and over £1.5million raised for children world wide.
Although Sam’s across the finish line and the match ball has safely reached Old Trafford, you can still donate to Sam’s Match Ball Mission via the link in our bio. Let’s see if we can get him to £2m by the match!

Will you support Sam Thompson's mission for Soccer Aid for UNICEF?
What is Sam’s Match Ball Mission?
Sam Thompson is on a mammoth mission for Soccer Aid for UNICEF. He’s been tasked with transporting the Soccer Aid match ball over 260 miles from Stamford Bridge to Old Trafford in time for this year’s game. Every mile, on foot and by bike, Sam is hoping to raise as much money as possible to support UNICEF’s work for children worldwide. Sam will leap out of his comfort zone (and into his Lycra!) and take to the road in the ultimate test of endurance over five gruelling days of running and cycling from 2 to 6 June. He’ll need all the support he can get because, with no athletic experience to fall back on, he faces the toughest physical journey of his life to ensure the match ball is delivered ahead of kick-off.
Sam’s ultimate goal is to support Soccer Aid for UNICEF’s mission to help children worldwide grow up safe, healthy and able to play. From essential health services and basic nutrition to a vital education and safe spaces, UNICEF and partners provide the support children need when and where they need it. So, by supporting Sam to go the distance from Stamford Bridge to Old Trafford, you’re supporting Soccer Aid for UNICEF to go the distance too, for children everywhere. You can play your part and make a donation.
